In an astonishingly short time, just two months, the family made a decision of great importance: buying a caravan. Normally inclined to think everything through carefully, they broke from this pattern with their spontaneous choice. The chosen companion for their travels: a Knaus Südwind 500 QDK , purchased during a trade fair visit in Düsseldorf in 2022.
Although they made the purchase decision surprisingly quickly, the subsequent wait for the handover of the caravan required another year of patience.
Julia and Nikolai faced an exciting challenge when they purchased the caravan – neither Julia nor Nikolai had a trailer license or a suitable towing vehicle at that time.
Things were quickly put into action and her old car was replaced with a suitable one and just one month later Nikolai successfully completed his trailer driving license.
Was there a design vision for the caravan makeover?
In fact, Julia already had a clear idea of the interior design before she bought the caravan. She was inspired by regularly browsing through attractive travel accounts on Instagram, especially by the caravan makeovers and self-designed projects. Unfortunately , in reality, she lacked the time and craftsmanship to do her own conversion.
During the year-long wait, she took the opportunity to get a wealth of equipment and decorations - and that before she could even get into her caravan (the model she wanted was unfortunately not on display at the fair). When she finally picked it up in July 2023, she immediately set about furnishing it. Even though their caravan already looks very cozy - Julia and Nikolai's caravan makeover is not finished yet.
What is your color concept in the camper?
From the beginning, she was particularly taken with the light, natural tones that create an airy and natural atmosphere inside. But Julia also likes black accents, which give the interior an elegant touch.
"The wood tone played an important role in the decision to buy the caravan. One or two campers would probably scratch their heads at this point, but for us the feel-good factor was the deciding factor."

Julia lovingly calls her caravan her imperfectly perfect family room. On the one hand, it has to do with the fact that she actually wanted a different floor plan. Nevertheless, they have already created a wonderful and cozy oasis, although there are still so many open projects for their caravan makeover .
Among other things, more new curtains are to be installed in the caravan. The existing ones in the dining area have already provided a great upgrade and it will not stop there. The headboard will be upgraded with beautiful foil and some pull-out shelves will be installed in the camper kitchen . They also have a permanent pitch that they want to set up with a permanent awning this year. A new floor, furniture and a lot more camping decoration will be installed here.
Your advice to people who don’t dare to do a caravan makeover?
A few accents and some decoration are enough to create a completely new feeling in the room. A small new carpet, new curtains, new bed linen, a few artificial plants and you basically have a new caravan.
